Monthly Capriccio is seeking previously unpublished submissions written in the light novel style (sparse text, dialogue-driven stories, short paragraphs, etc.), although some works of general fiction will be considered. Stories should be a brisk read overall. (If you need further clarification or examples of the light novel style, please see our “About” page.)
We want to see well-written, original, and non-derivative stories that are in some way unique and interesting. All works submitted within our guidelines will be considered for inclusion in the e-zine, but preference will be given to stories that demonstrate a strong sense of creativity—enthralling tales that will keep readers sticking around until the next issue. Of course all genres are welcome.
Writers need not have been published before, but we will be looking for works that show [a] good command of the English language. Emerging, unpublished authors, and established writers alike are welcome.
We are considering works of any length, as we are looking to publish short stories as well as serialized works. Short stories should be about 1000 to 8000 words, approximately the same length as a single chapter. If you would like to submit a work of flash fiction (less than 1000 words), please send only work that is polished and complete.
Serialized works can be either a work that has already been completed or a story that the author can work on as he or she goes. For finished works, the story must already be split up into appropriately-sized chapters (about 1000 to 8000 words) upon submission. For works that are written as you go, please submit a detailed proposal of the story, descriptions of the principal characters, an outline of the story’s direction, and 2-3 sample chapters.
We cannot offer you any payment at this time, aside from publication in the ezine. However, we hope that if the magazine is successful we may be able to collect and print authors’ works in bound volumes for sale.
Please submit your best work as an .rtf or .doc file to firstname.lastname@example.org. Please format your work in 12 point Times New Roman, double spaced, and one inch margins. Submissions are accepted year round. All work remains the sole right of the author. For further questions, please feel free to contact us at the address above.
